IBS and Children

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can affect anyone irrespective of the, gender and body type. The syndrome can affect anyone, anytime. Children are equally prone to suffer with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) as like adults. The Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects a person’s life style in general and digestive system in particular.

The IBS is often accompanied with abdominal pain, cramp in the intestine, diarrhea and constipation. So if your child is suffering with any of the above-mentioned sicknesses, then this may be cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Take it seriously and help your child. Keep a watch on the symptoms of your child and notice the occurrences and frequency of symptoms. If your child complains for pain in stomach or suffers with chronic diarrhea at a regular interval for a period of more than 12 weeks, then this may be cause of IBS.

Sometime your child suffers because of some stressful situations at home or elsewhere or sometime because of homework too.  Although this may not be the direct cause of IBS but sometime this may trigger the symptoms.

If your child is showing several of the above symptoms repetitively, then this may be trigger of IBS.  Do not take it lightly; discuss the symptoms with your doctor. Make it sure if the child is suffering with IBS or not.  Only a doctor will be able to set the fact that your Childs’ symptoms are either the cause of some other sickness or due to IBS. After examining, your child’s doctor will be able to recommend the right precautions and treatments.

Try to make changes in your child’s lifestyle to prevent any more recurrences of IBS. Treatment for IBS is similar to all; this means your child has to receive similar medications as recommended for full grownup adults. You may be unhappy with the kind of treatment for your child. Discuss it with the Doctor.

Try to regulate your child’s diet, include fiber rich and fat less foodstuffs in the diet. This will help your child, making easy come out from IBS. But be cautious, do not do any thing forcefully, the case is particularly true in case of Asian and Indian Parents, otherwise the situation may become worse, as stress is one of the major introducer of IBS.

Speak to your child and try to identify the situations that makes him / her stressed. In children, IBS is normally accompanied with stress or anxiety. Identify, what is bothering your child and what are the situations that keeps him / her cool, calm and relaxed. 

 

Monitoring dietary pattern, and speaking to child and allowing him to speak, so that you can identify what causes stress in him / her will help you in solving your child’s IBS problems. Thus your child will make an easy come out from IBS

Identify the symptoms and its causes in your child, take the necessary steps and help prevent your child from Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
