Estropipate
What is Estropipate?
This medication is an estrogen replacement and it used to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes. This medication is also prescribed for teenagers who are not maturing at a normal rate. This medication comes in tablets or vaginal cream. Other uses for this medication are also to treat osteoporosis, breast cancer and prostate cancer.
How to take this medication:
If using the tablets of this medication be sure to swallow the medication whole do not crush it, or chew it. If you have trouble swallowing or are on a feeding tube be sure to talk to your doctor so he can tell you how to take this medication, if this is the case your doctor might recommended the vaginal cream. When using the vaginal cream follow the instructions on the box. Put the cream into the applicator then insert the applicator into the vagina and push it all the way down. After doing this wash it with warm soapy water
Before your next use, always wash it in warm soapy water; never wash it in hot or boiling water because there is a chance that it might damage the applicator. .
Side effects of this medication:
There are a few side effects that come with this medication they are not known to be life threatening or really dangerous but if they become bothersome be sure to talk to your doctor about it to see what can be done. The side effects are as follow:
- Bloating
- Abdominal pain
- Enlargement of breasts
- Vaginal bleeding
- Sexual problems
- Depression
- Hair loss
This are just a few of the side effects that may happen ask your doctor about any others you feel you should know about or if you experience any symptoms that cannot be explained because they could also be a side effect or allergic reaction to this medication.
When not to take this medication
This medication should not be used in women who have breast cancer or any other cancers that might have been promoted by estrogen. Tell your doctor if you have been treated for any type of cancer in the past. Also never use if you might become pregnant or are pregnant and or breast-feeding. Also avoid this medication if you have abnormal genital bleeding. Or if you have blood clots or other bleeding disorders. The vaginal cream should not be used if you have had an allergic reaction to any of its ingredients. Talk to your doctor about the ingredients and see if there are any you might be allergic to.
Warnings about this medication that you should know:
The risk of a women getting uterine cancer is a high risk when she is taking estrogen for too long and taking a large dose of it. It may also increase the risk of breast cancer in some women. Women who take estrogen after going through menopause have a higher risk of getting gallbladder disease. Also this medication has a risk for blood clots, which can cause heart attack and stroke in some people. This medication might cause your blood pressure to rise or drop so be sure to have it checked regularly especially if you have or have had a history of high blood pressure. Be sure to tell your doctor what medications you are taking including noon prescription drugs or herbal products. Also if you are taking any vitamins. Also tell your doctor if you smoke, or have a history of heart disease in your family. Or if you have ever had a heart attack or stroke. Also if you are going through menopause. Also if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, trouble with your bowels, if you have trouble with circulation When you are taking estrogen and you feel you have any of the following symptoms get in touch with your doctor right away because it could be signs of a serious problem:
- Abnormal bleeding of the vagina
- Vomiting
- Vision changes
- Coughing blood
- Lumps in your breast
- Numbness of arms or legs
Storing this medication
Keep this medication in the same container it came in and keep it out of the reach of children and animals. Keep it away from heat and moisture do not store this medication in your bathroom. Or near a sink because the moisture can keep it from working properly or make the medication completely unable to be used. Keep it at room temperature. If the medication becomes out of date ask your doctor or pharmacist how you can safely get rid of it.
