What is Estrostep?

Estrostep is a birth control pill given to sexually active teens and also adults to help them from becoming pregnant. This medication is known to be 99% active.

How to take this medication
            Swallow the medication whole do not crush it, or chew it. If you have trouble swallowing or are on a feeding tube be sure to talk to your doctor so he can tell you how to take this medication. This medication can be taken with or without food , if your stomach becomes upset with this medication then it would be best to take it with a meal or a snack. Try to take this medication at the same time each day that way you do not forget to take it, but it f you do happen to forget to take it take it as soon as you remember but if it is almost time for your next dose skip the dose you missed and go back to your regular schedule never take 2 doses at once. This medication is given to take one tablet a day for 21 days. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you have any questions.

Special warnings when taking this medication:
            If you smoke cigarettes while on this medication it can give you a higher risk for heart problems. If you have been diagnosed with lung cancer be sure to tell your doctor to see if this medication is safe for you to take.  Also tell your doctor if you have had a heart attack or been diagnosed with heart failure.  Keep this medication away from small children for it can cause death if a child should have an accidental overdose of this medication.  If you feel a child has had an overdose of this medication seek medical help right away.

Precautions to take when taking this medication

            Talk to your doctor if you have any medical history of the following illnesses because if you do it may not be safe for you to take this medication.

• Asthma
• High blood pressure
• Liver disease
• Kidney failure
• Heart disease
• Strokes
• Blood clots
• Seizures

These are just a few medical illnesses but if you have any history of any other conditions in your family be sure to tell your doctor.

Food and Drug interactions

            There are no known food interactions with this medication, but if you get any side effects or symptoms when eating a certain food with this medication stop eating it and talk to your doctor about it right away. There are drug interactions so tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medications:

• Penicillin
• Some antibiotics
• Sulfa
• Seizure medication
• Anti-depressants

Also tell your doctor if you are taking any other medications that are not prescribed such as vitamins, over the counter allergy pills and also herbal products.

Overdose
            If you or anyone you know has taken an overdose calls poison control immediately or go your local emergency room right away. There is no known causes of this medication causing death if taken as an over dose but it could be possible. If you feel a child has accidentally take an overdose of this medication call poison control and an ambulance right away and rush to the emergency room because even if it is not known to cause death in adults it may cause death in a younger child.

Storage of this medication

            Store this medication is a cool dry place away from sun light or moisture do not store this medication in your bathroom or anywhere near a sink because the moisture can cause this medication to become unable to be used or can cause it not to work as well as it should. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and animals. If your medication becomes out dated be sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist how to dispose of this medication properly and safely.

Important tips to know when taking this medication.
            It is important to go see your doctor if you feel that you might have become pregnant so that your doctor can give you a pregnancy test to be sure or not if you have become pregnant. If you have become pregnant you may or may not need this medication any more so be sure to tell your doctor if you thin you are pregnant.
