Estrogen Patches:
Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is estradiol and used for relieving symptoms of menopause. This is a HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) and is useful for controlling symptoms including intense episodes of heat and sweating known as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, itching and burning, and other symptoms of premenopause and menopause.
The medicine is available in patches and can be used for other purposes also.
Precaution:
- If you are allergic to estradiol, you should not use estrogen patches.
- If you have blood related problem, especially blood clotting problem, estrogen patch should not be prescribed to you.
- If you are suffering from vaginal bleeding, breast or cervical cancer, you should not use estrogen patch.
- The medicine may be less effective, if you are overweight.
- If you have a history of asthma, epilepsy or migraine, estrogen patch should be prescribed to you with caution.
- If you have any gall bladder disease, inform your doctor before using estrogen patch, as these patches may increase gallbladder disease.
- If you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, you should not use estrogen patch.
- If you have or had liver or kidney disease, consult your doctor before using estrogen patches.
- If you are taking other medicines including blood thinners, epilepsy drugs, steroids, tricyclic antidepressants, rifampin, barbiturates and cimetidine, inform your doctor.
- If you are taking any prescribed or non-prescribed, food supplements or herbal medicine, you should inform your doctor before using estrogen patch.
Warning:
- Estrogen therapy can increase the risk of uterus cancer, so you must visit your doctor for regular check up.
- If you observe any abnormality such as excessive vaginal bleeding, lumps in breast, chest pain or abdominal pain, you should immediately consult your doctor.
- If you take alcohol, you should inform your doctor.
- If you are nursing mother prescribed with estrogen patch, you should avoid breast-feeding or consult your doctor.
- Estrogen therapy may also increase the risk of breast cancer. If you suspect any abnormality in breast including lump or cyst, you should immediately inform your doctor.
Overdose:
- The symptoms of overdose may vary from person to person.
- The symptoms of overdose may be nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and vaginal bleeding.
- If you observe any of the symptoms or any other symptoms, you should contact to your doctor immediately.
Side Effects:
- The common side effects of estrogen therapy may include headache, skin rashes, change of color of skin, dizziness, change of weight.
- The more serious side effects include allergic reaction (swelling in face, lip throat and difficulty in respiration), depression, breast tenderness, chest pain, pain in arms and legs, vaginal bleeding, yellowness in skin and eyes, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea, insomnia, anxiety, high blood pressure, dizziness, vomiting, breast lumps, fatigue, swelling or tenderness in abdomen, vaginal bleeding and vaginal yeast infection.
- Some other side effects may also be observed. If you observe any of the symptoms as mentioned or any other symptom, you should talk to your doctor immediately.
How to take:
- Estrogen patch should be used only if prescribed by the doctor.
- Estrogen patch is available in a sealed protective pouch.
- Open carefully the protective liner cover and hold the patch, remove protective liner completely and through it.
- Apply the adhesive side of the patch to a dry and clean area of skin on the trunk including buttocks and abdomen.
- You should never apply the patch to your breast or waist.
- The application site should be rotated in such a way that at least one-week gap is maintained between consecutive applications at a particular site.
- If you have forgot to apply a new patch, apply the new patch as soon as you remember. If it time of your next patch, apply a single patch.
- If a patch has fallen, replace it with a new patch immediately.
How to store:
- The patch should be stored at room temperature out of reach of children
- The estrogen patches should be stored in sealed pouches and should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
- Outdated medicines should not be used.
