Estrogen and Progestin:

Generic Ingredients: The generic ingredients of the medicine are estrogen and progestin. The medicine is recommended for reducing symptoms of post menopause. This is a HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) and is useful for controlling symptoms including intense episodes of heat and sweating known as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, itching and burning, and other symptoms of post menopause. In certain cases the medicine can also be used in preventing the risk of osteoporosis.

Estrogen alone, if prescribed can increase the risk of uterus cancer. The risk can be minimized if estrogen is prescribed with progestin.

The medicine can also be prescribed for other purposes also.

Precaution:

  • If you are allergic to estrogen or progestirone, you should not use estrogen with progestin.
  • If you have liver problem or blood related problem, especially blood clotting problem, this medicine should not be prescribed to you.
  • If you have or had breast or cervical cancer, you should not use this medicine.
  • If you have a history of asthma, epilepsy or migraine, the medicine should be prescribed to you with caution.
  • If you have any gall bladder disease, inform your doctor before using the medicine, as the therapy may increase gallbladder disease.
  • Although the medicine is not intended for use of childbearing mothers, if you have been prescribed the medicine and you suspect pregnancy, you should immediately consult to your doctor.
  • If you have or had liver or kidney disease, consult your doctor before using the medicine.
  • If you are taking other medicines including blood thinners, epilepsy drugs, steroids, theophylline, cyclosporine, acetaphenomin, inform your doctor.
  • If you are taking any prescribed or non-prescribed medicine, food supplements or herbal medicine, you should inform your doctor before using estrogen patch.

 

Warning:

  • Estrogen and progestin may increase the risk of breast cancer, so you must visit your doctor for regular check up.
  • If you observe any abnormality such as excessive vaginal bleeding, lumps in breast, chest pain or abdominal pain, you should immediately consult your doctor.
  • If you take alcohol, you should inform your doctor.
  • If you are nursing mother prescribed with estrogen and progestin, you should avoid breast-feeding as progestin may occur in breast-milk or consult your doctor.
  • You should carry out regular checkups for blood sugar, blood pressure, gall bladder and lipid profiles as the medicine may sometimes elevate the diseases.

 

Overdose:

  • The symptoms of overdose may vary from person to person.
  • The symptoms of overdose may be nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and vaginal bleeding.
  • If you observe any of the symptoms or any other symptoms, you should contact to your doctor immediately.

 

Side Effects:

  • The common side effects of estrogen therapy may include headache, skin rashes, change of color of skin and dizziness.
  • The more serious side effects include allergic reaction (swelling in face, lip throat and difficulty in respiration), depression, breast tenderness, chest pain, pain in arms and legs, vaginal bleeding, yellowness in skin and eyes, abdominal cramps, nausea, insomnia, anxiety, high blood pressure, dizziness, vomiting, breast lumps, fatigue, swelling or tenderness in abdomen and vaginal bleeding.
  • Some other side effects may also be observed. If you observe any of the symptoms as mentioned or any other symptom, you should talk to your doctor immediately.

 

How to take:

  • The medicine should be used only if prescribed by the doctor.
  • Take the medicine with a full glass of water.
  • The medicine can be taken with or without food.
  • Your doctor for any side effects should continuously monitor you.
  • If you have forgot to take your medicine, take the medicine as soon as you remember. If it time of your next dose, take a single dose.

How to store:

  • The medicine should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children
  • The medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
  • Outdated medicines should not be used.
