Can Diabetes Have an Association With Pregnancy in Some Cases

American Association of Diabetes says that there are two types of diabetes type 1 and type 2. The first one affects, mostly, children and adolescents, and the second often affects older overweight adults. And a few cases are observed in people with genetic problems.

The third type of diabetes is diabetes during pregnancy. Do you know that there is also an association of diabetes with pregnancy in some cases? There are many questions in your mind in relation to this topic. Some of them might be how can a female acquire diabetes during pregnancy or should a diabetic female get pregnant? Etc. Gestational diabetes is another name for diabetes acquired during pregnancy. It goes away after the baby is born. But such mothers may acquire diabetes type 2 at the latter stages of their lives.

When gestational diabetes occurs the body becomes insulin resistant. The symptoms are a bit different than type 2 diabetes. There will be an abnormal increase in weight. This is because the baby will increase its fetal urination due to high levels of glucose. Generally females who are pregnant must undergo diabetic tests during 24th and 28th week of pregnancy to be cautious.

This is very rare. Only 2 to 3 percent of the population of pregnant women is affected. The risk of gestational diabetes is more in females who are over weight and who are of more age. It may also cause to females who have the family history of diabetes type 2. Also if there was gestational diabetes during the previous pregnancy chances may be that it will be caused this time also. In previous pregnancy if the child weighted 9 pounds or more the risk for gestational may increase.
