Questions to Ask the Doctor about Lung Cancer

There are certain questions that should be asked by the patient, so that he or she can get the answers from the doctor, which would enable them to understand their condition in a better way:

Diagnosis

  • What tests will I undergo to diagnose lung cancer? Are they painful?
  • When will I get to know the test results after the tests are performed?
  • What type of lung cancer do I actually have?
  • Can you tell me my prognosis?

Treatment

  • What treatments options do I have?
  • Are there any clinical trials that I can enroll in?
  • Will I need to be hospitalised to receive my treatment, if so how long will I have to hospitalised?
  • Will my normal activities of daily living change during my treatment, if yes, I would be needing guidelines as to how I would be able to cope with them?

Side Effects of Treatment

  • What type of side effects should I expect?
  • How long will they last?
  • What side effects should I note and who would be the concerned people I would be informing them about?

Follow-up Treatment

  • After receiving my treatment, how often do I need to have a checkup?
  • What type of followup care should I receive?
  • Will I ultimately be able to resume my normal lifestyle?

The Health Care Team

  • Who will be involved with my treatment?
  • How experienced are you in caring for patients with lung cancer?
  • What survival rates have you seen in patients who have the same disease history as I?
