Generic Name: Aripiprazole

What is it?
Abilify is a type of antipsychotic medication. It works by altering the chemical actions of the brain. It is used to treat the symptoms associated with schizophrenia and bipolar mania. Schizophrenia is the illness/disease that causes individuals to lose touch with reality, often creating hallucinations, delusions and other random thoughts. This drug works by changing the brain’s two main chemical messengers: serotonin and dopamine. These two main chemicals affect the brain’s functions. This medication has not been tested for use in children or teenagers at the present time.

How to take it?
Abilify has to be taken as directed by your doctor. It should be taken with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. It is usually taken once a day. The usual dose is 10 or 15 milligrams once a day. After a period of two weeks, your doctor may elect to increase your dosage. You should take it regularly to get the best results. Do not stop taking this medication unless speaking to your doctor first. This medication is available in tablet and liquid form.

Warnings and Precautions
You should always speak to your doctor and let him or her know if you suffer from liver disease, have heart problems, or high blood pressure, ever diagnosed with breast cancer, diabetes, seizures or epilepsy.

In some cases, this drug can cause tardive dyskinesia, a condition that is marked by involuntary movements in the fact and body. This condition can in some instances be permanent and appears to happen in older adults, especially women. You should check with your doctor about this before taking this medication.

You should use extreme caution when taking this medication and driving, operating machinery or performing any other type of dangerous work, as this medication can lead you to be dizzy and drowsy; thus creating a dangerous situation for the individual. You should also avoid taking alcohol when taken this medication.

An individual should also try and avoid becoming overheated and exerted. As this medication can affect an individual’s body temperature, you need to use extreme care in hot weather and if you exercise on a regular basis. You need to remember to constantly hydrate your body by drinking plenty of fluids, such as water and juice.

Individuals taken the following drugs may need to have their dosages altered in order to prevent a drug interaction. These include: prozac, nizoral, paxil and quinidex.

What should you do if you miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, and if you remember the same day, then you should still take it that day. If you remember the next day, then skip the missed dose, and take your regular dosage, do not double up on your dose.

What are the side effects?
Side effects from Abilify can range from common to less common. Common side effects include anxiety, blurred vision, weight gain, headaches, tremors, nausea, vomiting, or constipation, and difficulty sleeping. Less common and more serious side effects include anemia, appetite loss, blood pressure, difficulty swallowing, and frequent urination, seizures, sweating, and swelling. If an individual experiences uncontrolled movement of the mouth, tongue, jaw, arms, or legs or irregular heartbeat then an individual should call their doctor immediately and get medical attention.

Hyperglycemia has in some cases been reported in individual who have been treated with atypical antipsychotic medications; such as this one. You should tell your doctor immediately if you experience excessive thirst, frequent urination, excessive hunger and weakness.

How to store this medication?
Abilify oral solution should be kept in the refrigerator and can be used by to six months after opening. The ideal temperature to store these tablets is 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and for storage of the oral solution the ideal temperature should also be 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

What does it look like?
Abilify is also available under the name Aripiprazole. It comes in two forms: tablet and liquid. The tablet form comes in four types and forms:

1.         10 mg pink, rectangular tablet
2.         15 mg yellow, round tablet
3.         20 mg white, round tablet
4.         30 mg pink, round tablet
Abilify oral solution comes in doses between 5 to 30 mg.

What if you overdose?
If you overdose on Abilify you can experience drowsiness and vomiting. If this happens you should seek immediate medical attention.
