Gris-PEG: Types and Side Effects

Gris-PEG is a prescription drug taken for the treatment of ringworm infections.  It works like penicillin.  However, this medication is proven effective only in the treatment of ringworm infections, there are no proofs that Gris-PEG can be effective in other fungal infections other than those of ringworm.

Taking this medication may possibly cause side effects, thus you may will need to assure you discuss with your doctor any condition, health issues or medication that you at taking.  This is to ensure that your doctor will be able to advise you on how to take Gris-PEG properly.

Types of infection Gris-PEG can treat

Gris-PEG is proven effective in the treatment of the following:

  • Athlete’s Foot
  • Barber’s itch or inflammation of the facial hair follicles
  • Ringworm of the body
  • Ringworm of the groin and thigh
  • Ringworm of the nails
  • Ringworm of the scalp especially for children

Important information about Gris-PEG

Before taking this medication, you and your doctor needs to discuss important information with respect to the administration of this medication and any effects it may have on your health condition or current medication.

Gris-PEG may reduce effectiveness of various drugs such as:

  • Oral anticoagulants or blood thinners.  The patient may therefore become predisposed to blood clotting.  Your doctor may advise increase of dosage while you are taking Gris-PEG.
  • Birth control pills.  Because of the reduced effectiveness, a woman taking Gris-PEG may become pregnant.  Doctors believe that taking this medication may adversely affect the development of an unborn child.  It is therefore necessary that you discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant or may become pregnant while taking Gris-PEG.

In addition to the advise that women should avoid taking this medication during pregnancy, men are likewise advised to avoid fathering a child during this medication.

Side effects of Gris-PEG

Aside from the reduced effect of Gris-PEG with the above medication, patients may also need to be wary about possible side effects that may come from taking this medication.

  1. If you are prone to allergy, discuss this with your doctor because it may worsen your condition rather than treat it.
  2. Hives and skin rashes may happen; this is the most common side effect of this medication.
  3. Less common but may be serious side effects include: diarrhea, fatigue, headache, nausea, mouth inflammation, upper abdominal pain and vomiting.  Patient taking this medication may also experience insomnia or inability to fall asleep.  Routine activities may also be affected.
  4. Possible but rare side effects of Gris-PEG include: menstrual irregularities, itching and tingling sensation in hands and feet and swelling.

You may also experience sensitivity to light and may need to avoid going under the sun for a long time.

In addition to the above possible side effects, you may need to check with your doctor should you feel anything unusual while undergoing this medication.  This is to ensure that you will not experience adverse medical problems.

Gris-PEG is proven to cure ringworm infections, the period of recovery may vary depending on the type of infection you have.  This may however be discussed by your doctor before the administration of this medication. 

Avoid shortcutting your treatment, even if you already feel better you will need to finish the treatment advised by your doctor.  This is to ensure that the treatment is complete because it is possible to feel better before you are actually cured.

Finally, to ensure proper absorption of this drug, you may need to take it during mealtime and with some fatty foods.  You will also need to drink a full 8-ounce glass of water with Gris-PEG.
