Background

The components of this medicine alleviate different individual symptoms and when they are used in combination, they are used for treatment of complex medical symptoms. The Aspirin relieves pain, reduces inflammation and fever. Caffeine constricts blood vessels while the butalbital is a nervous system relaxant. Together they can take care of tension induced headaches, as well as other medical problems.

Warning precautions, overdose

  • Never take Fiornal without consulting a doctor
  • If you are in the abit of consuming alcohol (more than three pegs per day) then avoid taking this medication
  • Similarly if you have stomach ulcer, if you had recent surgery or have a bleeding platelet problem, you should not take this medication
  • If you suffer form kidney problems, porphyria, fluid retention, liver problem, heart problem or blood pressure. In many of these cases you may have to take Fiornal in lower doses, but the final decision lies with the doctor
  • Do not use this drug if you are pregnant or lactating  as the drug harm the baby
  • Do not use this drug if you are over 60 years of age because the medicine has been found to have greater side-effects in older people
  • This drug is no recommended for people less than 20 years of age and hence should not be given for any symptomatic treatment
  • Never take more than six tablets per day
  • Do not offer your medication to anyone; neither take medication from any other person. This drug should be taken under doctor’s advice
  • In case it emanates vinegar smell discard the medicine immediately
  • There are many drugs which react with this medication; hence it is highly imperative that the doctor knows on what medication you are on so he can judge what is the right dosage and combination. In particular, anticoagulants, salicylates, anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid and insulin are some of the comounds that heavily react with this medication. Any excess can lead you into over dosage which can be fatal if the right medical attention is not give to you in time.
  • Be careful not to take over the counter medication along with this medicine because excess aspirin too is dangerous and you will not know when you cross the line

 

While you are on this medication, inform your family to look out for symptoms of over dose such as confusion of mind, clammy skin, weakness, small pupils, nausea, excessive sweating, slow breathing, etc. This may develop into loss of consciousness, coma, and death if not treated immediately.

 

How to Take

This medicine may have some serious side effects and hence should always be taken as per the doctor’s prescription. In case you have any doubts regarding the dosage or any matter relating to its use, talk with your doctor and find out exactly what is right way.

You can take Fiorinal with water or milk – milk is recommended if you have stomach aches or you get tummy upsets.

In case you miss a dose anytime, take the missed doze as soon as your remember it. However, be careful not to take two tablets at the same time as this can harm you as an overdose.  The best is to take the next dose after the right time. For example you have to take it 8 hourly and you forgot to take at 8 AM; you remember at 10 AM. You take it at 10 AM and then  you take your next doze at 6 PM counting 8 hours after the doze.

 

Side effects

There are many side effects that can happen though they are rare. In case you get any of the following symptoms, then immediately discontinue use and seek medical attention:

  • Allergy type reactions such as hyperventilating, body itching, throat constriction and difficulty in breathing, breakout of hives, swelling of tongue, lips
  • Dizziness and feeling of weakness

 

There are a few less serious side effects such as:

  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness, tiredness, light headed feeling
  • Ears ringing

 

A very important thing to remember is that one component is butalbital which can be habit forming.

How to store it

This drug may be stored at room temperature, protected from heat and moisture
