Gantrisin

Sulfisoxazole acetyl, better known by its commercial name of Gantrisin, is useful in the treatment of a variety of diseases. Its primary use is in the treatment of severe and sustained urinary tract infection in children such as pyelonephritis (bacterial kidney inflammation), pyelitis (inflammation of the part of the kidney that drains urine into the ureter), and cystitis (inflammation of the bladder). In addition, Gantrisin is also used in the treatment of bacterial meningitis, and as a preventive for children who have had meningitis.  Gantrisin is used along with penicillin or erythromycin in treating middle ear infections.  Gantrisin along with pyrimethamine is also useful in the treatment of Taxoplasmosis, a parasitic disease that is transmitted by infected cats or their feces, and through litter boxes and improperly cooked meat.

Dosage

Gantrisin should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor. The normal recommended dosage for children above two months is 150 milligrams for every Kilogram of body weight. Starting dose is half of this, namely 75 milligrams for every kilogram of body weight. Use a specially marked measuring spoon to ensure accurate dosage. This is subject to an overall limit of 6 grams during a period of 24 hours.
For effective action, there should be a constant level of Gantrisin in the blood and urine. At the same time taking an excess of the medicine can lead to harmful effects. Hence it is important that you take the correct dosage at regular intervals.

How to take Gantrisin

Shake well before using Gantrisin. The patient should consume a lot of fluids while taking this medicine to prevent the formation of crystals in the urine and stones in the bladder. Ensure that you give the medicine at regular intervals taking care not to miss a dose. If you do miss a dose, and it’s not yet time for the next dose, you may give it as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Never give two doses together as an excess of the drug can create problems.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature away from direct sunlight. The medicine should be kept in a tightly closed container. You can use the container in which it came, making sure that it is tightly closed.

Who can use Gantrisin?

Gantrisin should not be taken by infants less than two months old, and by pregnant women and nursing mothers. It should also be avoided be persons having a known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides. It can be taken by other persons, but use should be immediately suspended if there is any appearance of skin rash or other adverse reaction. Gantrisin should be used with caution on patients with severe allergy, bronchial asthma and to those with impaired renal or hepatic function.

Side Effects

Allergic reactions, general skin eruptions, reddening of the skin, inflammation and itching, reddish or purplish skin spots, yellowing of the skin, swelling, and rashes are some of the common and external side effects that are related to the skin.
Joint pain, back pain, difficulty in swallowing, unusual tiredness or weakness, sore throat, fever, and yellow eyes are other less common side effects.

These are comparatively rare.
