Focalin:

Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is demethylphenidate hydrochloride, and is used for treating ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), especially in children. This focalin contains d-isomer of methyl phenidate and is a mild central nervous system stimulant. The symptoms of ADHD include irregular attention, hyperactivity, distractability and impulsiveness. Focalin is able to reduce ADHD symptoms, increases attention and decreases impulsiveness and hyperactivity.

Focalin is available in extended release capsules of 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg.

Precaution:

  • If you had or have mental or physical problem, discuss with your doctor.
  • If you have epilepsy or seizure, glaucoma or high blood pressure, consult with your doctor.
  • If you are allergic to focalin or ritalin, you should not take the medicine.
  • If you are suffering from anxiety or tension, you should avoid focalin as the medicine may increase the symptoms.
  • If you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor before taking the medicine.
  • If you have taken MAO (Monoamine Oxidase) inhibitor in the past 14 days, you should not take focalin and should take this medicine only after maintaining a gap of 14 days.
  • If you or anyone in your family has motion tics (uncontrolled twitching of body parts) and verbal tics (uncontrolled repeating sounds or words) or Tourette’s syndrome, inform your doctor.
  • If your thoughts are abnormal or diagnosed with psychosis, you should inform your doctor.
  • If you have or had abnormal heart rate or abnormal EEG (Electro encephalograms), you should inform your doctor.
  • If two drugs are taken together, they may interact with each other. If you are taking any prescribed or non-prescribed, food supplements or herbal medicine including blood-thinners, medicines for depression, medicines for seizures, vitamins, food supplements and herbal products, you should inform your doctor before taking focalin.

 

Warning:

  • Drug depending patients or alcoholic patients should be prescribed focalin with caution.
  • Other therapies including psychological or counseling should also be tried. Long-term use of stimulants may cause suppression of growth, so you should take the medicine under supervision of doctor.
  • Focalin is not recommended for children below 6 years of age.
  • If you observe any visual disturbance, you should immediately contact to your doctor.
  • Carry out routine checkup for blood pressure.
  • If you are a nursing mother prescribed with focalin, you should inform your doctor.

 

Overdose:

  • The symptoms of overdose of focalin may include agitation, confusion, hallucinations, headache, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, muscle twitching, palpitations and tremors.
  • If you observe any of the symptoms as mentioned above or any other symptom, you should seek immediate medical help.

 

Side Effects:

  • The common side effects of focalin may include loss of appetite, stomach pain, weight loss, nausea, fever, irregular sleep and palpitation.
  • The more serious side effects include allergic reaction, irregular blood pressure, depression, dizziness, hallucinations, headache, rash, hives, twitching body movements, severe twitching and unable to continue sleep.
  • Some other side effects may also be observed. If you observe any of the symptoms as mentioned or any other symptom, you should talk to your doctor immediately.

 

How to take:

  • Focalin should be taken only if prescribed by the doctor.
  • Focalin should be taken twice a day, one in the morning and another after 4 hour interval.
  • Swallow the medicine with full glass of water. Don’t cut or chew the medicine.
  • Focalin can be taken with or without food.
  • If you have forgotten a dose, take as soon as you remember. If it is the time to take next dose, take a single dose. Do not take double dose of focalin.

 

How to store:

  • The medicines should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children
  • The focalin capsules should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
  • Outdated medicines should not be used.
