Hydromorphone Information: Definition, Precaution and Side Effects

Generic Name

Generic name of the medicine is hydromorphone hydrochloride. It belongs to the class of drugs known as narcotic analgesics and used for relieving moderate to severe pain caused by injury, surgery, renal or biliary colic or cancer.

Hydromorphone should be taken only if prescribed by the doctor.

Hydromorphone can be used for other purposes also.

Precaution

  • If you are allergic to hydromorphone or any other drug of his class, you should not take hydromorphone and should inform your doctor.
  • If you had or have kidney, liver, asthma, breathing problem, urinary problem, depression, low blood pressure, seizure or gallbladder disease, you should inform the doctor before taking hydromorphone.
  • Hydromorphone is a habit-forming medicine and should be used only under the supervision of your doctor.
  • If you are taking any other medicine whether prescribed, non-prescribed, food supplements, vitamins or herbal products, you should inform your doctor.
  • Hydromorphone is FDA category C medicine and it is not known whether it affects unborn baby, however if you are pregnant, you should not take the medicine as it may cause addiction and withdrawal symptom to newborn child. If you become pregnant while taking hydromprphone, inform your doctor immediately.
  • Hydromorphone passes into breast milk. If you are a breast-feeding mother prescribed with hydromorphone, you should stop breast-feeding as the medicine may cause addiction and withdrawal symptoms in nursing child.

Warning

  • The medicine may cause dizziness and therefore after taking hydromorphone do not drive and operate heavy machineries.
  • Avoid alcohol as alcohol may increase the drowsiness and dizziness caused by hydromorphone.
  • You should also avoid non-prescribed medicines especially sleeping pills, sedatives, tranquilizers or antihistamines.
  • Children below the age of 18 years are more likely to have side effects and therefore should be prescribed hydromorphone with precaution.
  • Hydromorphone is habit-forming medicine and should not be stopped immediately other wise it may cause withdrawal symptoms.

Overdose

  • You should only use the recommended dosage of hydromorphone under the supervision of your doctor or health care professional and if you suspect an overdose you should immediately contact to your doctor.
  • The symptoms of overdose may include low blood pressure, slow heart rate, weakness, slow breathing bluish tinge to skin and constricted pupils.
  • The heavy overdose of hydromorphone can be fatal.

Missed Dose

  • If you missed a dose, take as soon as you remember the missed dose. If it is almost the time of your next dose take a single dose.
  • Never take double dose at a time of hydromorphone.

Side Effects

  • Some of the serious side effects of hydromorphone include allergic reactions (difficulty in breathing, swelling in face, throat, and lips), slow breathing, seizures, cold skin, unconsciousness and sever weakness.
  • Some common side effects of hydromorphone include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and decreased appetite, sweating, itching and vomiting.
  • If any of the side effects as mentioned above or any other side effects are observed, you should immediately contact to your doctor.

How to take

  • The medicine should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
  • The medicine should be taken with food or milk, if it upsets your stomach.
  • The medicine if taken in excess of the recommended doses can be harmful.
  • The medicine should not be stopped immediately as it may cause withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor will reduce the doses gradually.

How to Store

  • Hydromorphone should be stored at room temperature and out of reach of children.
  • The medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
