Glucophage: Side Effects

Glucophage is an anti-diabetic medication for non-insulin dependent diabetes, otherwise known as Type 2 Diabetes.  This is a potent medication sometimes taken with other oral anti-diabetic drugs.  Although, Glucophage XR may be taken alone and it is still as powerful in regulating insulin function in the body.

Glucophage, as mentioned is a medication that will help to regulate the blood sugar level in your body.  However, Glucophage is merely an aid and certainly not a substitute to good diet and exercise.  Diabetics need to ensure that they control their intake of glucose from the food they eat and will likewise need to exercise to ensure that the insulin produced by the body will be converted into energy properly.

Important information about Taking Glucophage

Glucophage works efficiently to regulate and in fact assists the body to reduce absorption of glucose.  It also helps regulate the production of glucose in the body.  As such, its reaction to certain medical condition may need to be monitored.

Glucophage can cause side effect, it may be rare but surely, this side effect can be fatal.  Glucophage may predispose a patient to Lactic Acidosis.  It can acidify your blood, thus metallic taste, vomiting, lightheadedness, rapid heart beating, nausea and may cause adverse reaction to your liver and kidney.  Lactic Acidosis can be fatal, thus ensuring you avoid its development is necessary.

Other medical conditions may likewise be affected by taking Glucophage, it is therefore necessary that you discuss with your doctor any medications or treatments you are undergoing, have undergone or will be undertaking. 

Undergoing an x-ray or surgery may have an adverse effect to taking Glucophage, thus talk with your health professional before taking Glucophage.

As mentioned earlier, Lactic Acidosis can be fatal.  Weakness and heart problems may develop, thus onset of lactic acidosis symptoms may need immediate attention by your doctor.

Another side effect of taking Glucophage is hypoglycemia; this condition is where your blood sugar level went extremely low.  A patient experiencing hypoglycemia may experience hunger, drowsiness, weakness, sweating, tremor and nausea.  In severe hypoglycemia attacks, a patient may faint. 

To avoid seizure, a patient taking Glucophage may need to carry with him glucose tablets or gels.  If not, candy, fruit juices, soda or even table sugar may be used during an emergency.

Glucophage may also interact with various medications including but not limited to the following:

  • Heart medication
  • Lasix
  • Niaspan
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Dilantin
  • Diuretics

If you are taking or need to take any of the following, ensure you discuss with your doctor to get his advice.

Glucophage may also interact with alcohol, such as induce the development of Lactic Acidosis, so avoiding alcohol will be extremely helpful.

If you are pregnant or trying to be pregnant, you may not take Glucophage, it may be fatal for your fetus.
