Grisactin: Side Effects

Grisactin is a common brand for the generic drug Griseofulvin.  This is a prescription drug used to treat infections of the skin, hair and nails.  Grisactin works like penicillin, however, even those patients allergic to penicillin can use this medication.

Grisactin is effective in treating ringworm infections.  This medication however is not proven to treat any other fungal infection other than the following:

  • Ringworm
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Jock itch
  • Seat rash
  • Skin crease infection
  • Ringworm in the scalp, especially on children

Grisactin is effective especially if taken regularly and following the instructions given by your doctor.  Avoid the temptation of stopping the medication when you feel better.  Health professionals believe that you may feel better even before you are actually cured.  Thus, to ensure that your infection will not recur, finish the medication given by your doctor.

Side Effects of Grisactin

  • Common and less serious side effects:
    • Headache
    • Diarrhea
    • Nausea
    • Fatigue
    • Dizziness
    • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Rare but more serious side effects
    • Yellowing of the eye or skin
    • Soreness of the mouth or tongue
    • Mental or mood changes
    • Tingling or numbness of both hands and feet

Aside from the above possible side effects of Grisactin, patients taking this medication may also experience drug interaction if not advised properly.

Drug interactions of Grisactin

  • Blood thinner such as heparin and warfarin, Grisactin may reduce the effectiveness of your blood thinner.  Thus, you may need to discuss with your doctor if you are taking blood thinner medications if you will need Grisactin to cure your infections.
  • Grisactin may also reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills.  Thus, if you are pregnant or are trying to be pregnant, you may need to discuss this with your doctor because there is a possibility that Grisactin may adversely affect an unborn child.

Your doctor will also need to know if there are other medication that you are taking, this will help them understand your health condition and advise you properly.

Should by any chance, other side effects other than those mentioned herewith appear while taking Grisactin, you may need to rush to your doctor and explain to him what you feel.

How to use Grisactin

Grisactin needs to be taken orally.  It is best to take this medication during mealtime.  It may also help to take Grisactin with fatty foods to help in its absorption.

Take a full 8-ounce glass of water when taking Grisactin.

Treatment may take several weeks or several months to complete.  This may depend on the location of the infection.  Your doctor will be able to advise how you need to take this medication.  Following his advise and do not shortcut the process when you feel a bit better.  Complete the length of the treatment to avoid your infection to recur.

Things to avoid while taking Grisactin

As mentioned earlier, avoid getting pregnant while taking this medication.

You may feel sensitivity to light and thus you will need to avoid too much exposure to the sun.  If you cannot avoid going under the sun, you will need to wear protection against UV rays.
