Fevarin

Intro

Fevarin,or its generic counterpart Fluvoxamine (pronounced flew VOCK sa meen), is in a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.  In English this means that Fevarin affects certain chemicals in the brain which may become unbalanced causing a person to exhibit abnormal symptoms and behaviors.  This drug is most commonly used to treat depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Precautions

The primary precaution is that this drug should never be taken unless prescribed to you by your health care professional.   Never stop taking this drug without first consulting with your physician as adverse effects may apply.

Since Fevarin is used as an antidepressant you may need to be monitored for worsening symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts at the start of the drug therapy or at any time the dosage is changed.  In trials about 4% of cases children under the age of 18 experienced an increased propensity for mania.  Increased monitoring in children under the age of 18 is recommended.

You should advise your health care professional of any and all other prescription, over the counter, or herbal health supplements you are taking in order to better evaluate the risk to you.

Method of Dosage

This drug is taken by mouth in pill form.  Individual dosage depends on your condition and tolerance/response to the drug. This medication should always be taken with plenty of water and may be taken with or without food.  You should take this medication at the same time each day and never stop taking it without first consulting with your doctor.

For those suffering from depression the drug is normally dispensed at 50 milligrams per day rising to 100 milligrams after a few days.  Your health care provider may decide to raise the dosage after careful evaluation of any side effects you are experiencing.

If you have been prescribed Fevarin for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), your doctor may start you at a dosage of 150 milligrams and in some cases the dosage has been raised up to 300 milligrams.  Generally, an effective dosage was reached at between 150 and 200 milligrams for those suffering from OCD.

If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember, however if it is close to the time of your next dose skip the missed dose and continue as directed.  You should NEVER take a double does of this medication unless otherwise directed by your physician as an increase risk of side effects or overdose may occur.

Who Should(n't) Take

If you have a history of liver disease, seizures, mental or emotional problems including mania and or suicidal thoughts, speak to your doctor to evaluate the risks of exasperating your current health conditions.

One should use extreme caution when driving, operating heavy machinery, or doing any task which requires alertness as this drug may cause fatigue and dizziness.  Alcohol consumption is not recommended as it may intensify these effects.

If you are pregnant or wish to become pregnant this drug should not be used unless deemed seriously necessary.  Nursing mothers should not use this drug as it can be passed from mother to infant and is considered harmful to infants in any dosage.  Consult with your doctor if you are a mom or may be considering becoming one prior to the start of this medicine.

  • headache
  • tremor, nervousness, or anxiety
  • nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite and or weight
  • sleepiness or insomnia
  • decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty experiencing an orgasm

If you experience any of these less serious side effects you should continue taking the medication and talk to your doctor.

Other, more serious, side effects include:

  • an allergic reaction (which may cause difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; and or hives)
  • an irregular heartbeat or pulse
  • low blood pressure (which may result in dizziness and weakness)
  • high blood pressure (resulting in severe headache and blurred vision)
