Flurbiprofen

 

Intro

Flurbiprofen, pronounced  FLURE bih proe fin,is available with a prescription under the brand name Ansaid.  It is commonly used to treat inflammation and pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, as well as some other soft tissue injuries.  Due to the fact that this drug is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory it is also commonly used to treat fever. Pain and inflammation in the body.  

Precautions

The primary precaution is that this drug should never be taken unless prescribed to you by your health care professional.  You should never share your medication with anyone and any unused doses should be dis guarded immediately.

If prescribed flurbiprofen, you should avoid drinking alcoholic beverages in excess.  More than 3 drinks per day may cause harmful side effects such as excessive bleeding.  Advise your doctor if you drink more than 3-drinks per day. 

A person taking flurbiprofen should also avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, as it may increase sensitivity of the skin to sunlight.  You should use sunscreen and wear protective clothing if prolonged exposure us unavoidable. 

Many over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, and pain medications contain medicines similar to flurbiprofen, such as ibuprofen and keteprofen.  As such, you should advise your health care professional of any and all other prescription, over the counter, or herbal health supplements you are taking in order to better evaluate the risk to you.  Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you think something may be harmful to you.  It is their job to ensure you are getting the best treatment possible but it is your responsibility to make sure they are acting with all the facts in your best interest.

Method of Dosage

This drug is taken by mouth in pill form. Individual dosage depends on your condition and tolerance/response to the drug. It is recommended to take this drug with food, milk, or an antacid to lesson stomach upset. 

If you are taking flurbiprofen on a regular schedule, and miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as possible.  However if it is almost time for your next dose, skip this dose and take the next regularly scheduled dose.  You should NEVER double your dosage as serious side effects could result. 

If you have been prescribed flurbiprofen on an as needed basis, take the missed dose as needed and wait the recommended amount of time before taking another. 

 

 

Who Should(n't) Take

Before taking this medication you should advise your doctor of any and all of the following conditions:

  • high blood pressure
  • an allergy to aspirin
  • liver or kidney disease
  • an ulcer or bleeding in your stomach
  • fluid retention
  • heart disease
  • congestive heart failure
  • a coagulation (bleeding) disorder

 

If you have any of these conditions you may require special monitoring during treatment or you may not be able to take this drug. 

Since it is not known if flurbiprofen is harmful to an unborn baby, you should consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or considering getting pregnant.  This drug should not be taken late in pregnancy (3rd trimester) because it is known to effect the baby's heart.  You should also consult with your doctor if you are breast-feeding, as it is not known if it passes from mother to infant through the milk.

Side Effects

Less serious side effect include:

  • dizziness or headache
  • irregular menstrual periods
  • depression
  • fatigue or weakness
  • dry mouth or nausea
  • diarrhea or constipation

 

If you experience any of these side effects you may continue taking this medicine but should talk to your doctor as soon as possible

There are some serious side effects which if experienced should prompt you to stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention.  These include:

  • blood in vomit or bloody, black or tarry stools
  • an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue or face, and hives)
  • severe abdominal cramping, indigestion, or heartburn
  • yellowing of skin or eyes
  • muscle cramps, numbness, tingling, or seizures
  • ulcers in the mouth
  • decreased hearing or ringing in the ears
  • rapid weight gain or fluid retention

 

Storage

This drug should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.   As with every drug it should be kept OUT OF THE REACH of children and pets as accidental poisoning or overdose may occur.
