Fiorinal with codeine

Generic name

Butalbital, aspirin, caffeine, and codeine, phernobarbital, aspirin, and codeine

Background

Each of the compounds have a different effect upon the body. The combination in this drug is specifically used for relief from pain. This is because in combination they provide better relief than when taken separately.

Codeine is a well known analgesic which directly impacts the central nervous system. This drug is part of the barbiturates group and is basically a relaxant through the nervous system. It is important to note here that this particular drug is habit forming and hence should never be taken unless under strict supervision of the doctor. Because the body gets used to it, you may suffer from withdrawal symptoms when you stop the medicine. Ironically, when it is prescribed for people who have headaches, the withdrawal symptoms will accentuate the headaches further.

Caffeine also helps to relieve headache; this too creates a dependency on the drug and may have withdrawal symptoms. You should not take this drug for a prolonged period of time if you want to void all these risks.

Warning precautions, overdose

  • The most important precaution is to take care about allergic reactions that might occur from its clash with other medication. This drug reacts strongly with,  Diclofenac, Diflunisal , Etodolac, Fenoprofen, Floctafenine, Flurbiprofen, Ibuprofen, Indomethacin, Ketoprofen, Ketorolac, Meclofenamate, Mefenamic acid, Nabumetone, Naproxen, Oxaprozin, Oxyphenbutazone, Phenylbutazone, Piroxicam, Sulindac, Suprofen, Tenoxicam,Tiaprofenic acid, Tolmetin; and this is not an exhaustive list. This is why it is very important that your doctor knows what you are taking.
  • Inform the doctor if you are taking any type of antacids, anti coagulants, antidepressants, relaxants, pain relievers, birth control, etc. The use of these medicines along with this drug may heavily interfere in the treatment
  • This drug should not be taken during pregnancy since all the compounds, i.e. the barbiturates, the aspirin, the codeine and the caffeine cause birth defects.
  • For the same reason the drug should not be taken by women who are lactating since the drug can be passed off to the infant in the milk and can harm the child.
  • Children who are prescribed this drug may get over excited or drowsy. They should be watched closely if medicated. A word of caution here is that aspirin in high dozes cause Reye’s syndrome in children. Hence they should be given this in excess.
  • Mostly children under 12 years of age are contraindicated the use of this drug.
