Fioricet

Generic name

The drug that goes under the name of Fioricet is composed of Acentaminophen / butalbital/caffeine.

Background

This drug is prescribed for relief of pain and fever. It is made of three compounds (i) Butalbital, (ii) caffeine and (iii) acetaminophen. This medicine belongs to a group of drugs which relaxes the central nervous system to relieve pain and fever. 

However this medicine is prescribed for a number of other ailments as well.

Warning precautions, overdose

Whenever you take fioricet you should ensure that:

  • You do not drive or are around dangerous machinery. This medicine causes drowsiness and hence it can be very dangerous if you develop dizziness or drowsiness which has been reported is some cases.
  • You should avoid taking any sedatives, sleeping pills and other types of such things when you are on fioricet medication because it can amplify the effects or give you allergic reaction.
  • Do not take alcohol. This will affect your liver. It can also aggravate the dizzy feeling.
  • Ensure that the dosage does not exceed 400 mg per day. This is can very dangerous.
  • Do not double the dose if your pain is not relieved. It may harm you more than can help. Rather contact your doctor.
  • Beware that this drug can be addictive so it should be taken only with the permission of the doctor
  • Intake of alcohol interferes with this medication. Hence, if your drink regularly and this is above 3-4 pegs a day, your doctor should know about it.
  • Thos who have porphyria, kidney problems or liver disease should not take Fioricet
  • Some people may be able to take Fioricet even if they have the above ailments but the doctor will decide what specific dosage in indicated
  • Women who are pregnant should not take this drug. In case you are breastfeeding the doctor should be informed since the drug can be passed through the milk to the infant.
  • This drug should not be given to children below 12 years of age.
  • In case you are taking other medications inform your doctor. There are many other medicines which contain acetaminophen and excess of this compound can harm you. There are also a number of other drugs which may interfere with the absorption of the drug and or accelerate its absorption. You need to be extremely careful while you combine this drug with other drugs. It may also accelerate drowsiness to a fatal level.

 

I case you suffer from overdose; you will mostly likely manifest the following symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Mild or pronounced confused state of mind
  • Stomach ache
  • Fainting
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Coma

 

Alert someone in the house or neighborhood about these symptoms and if it is observed, you should be immediately rushed to the hospital for overdose treatment.

 

How to Take

This drug is to be taken very carefully under the doctor’s supervision. In case you have trouble understanding the ask again and again till you are fully satisfied. You may take this medicine with water and never exceed the dosage prescribed for you.  In case you suffer of stomach ache, then you can take Fioricet with milk. It may harm you severely. In case your pain does not subside, consult your doctor for advice.

Side effects

There are quite a few serious side effects that can happen while you are taking Fioricet. If you experience swelling of lips, face, tongue, if you feel your breathing constricted, if you get unusual bleeding or you bruise faster than usual, if your breathing is getting laborious – stop the medicine immediately and inform your doctor.  In some cases it may also cause liver damage and lowering of blood sugar with fainting spells.

Though the side effects are rare, they can happen and hence you should be aware about it.

Normally the medicine side effects are limited to drowsiness, lightheaded feeling, dry mouth, vomiting sensation, low appetite, constipation, itching of the skin, fatigue, etc. Even if these are not so pronounced, ensure you keep the doctor informed as and wen you feel different while taking this medication.

How to store it

It can be stored at room temperature but it needs to be kept in air tight jars/ bottles.
