Gabapentin: Capsule, Side Effects

Generic Name: Generic name of the medicine is gabapentin. It is used alone or in combination of other epilepsy medicine for controlling some type of seizures. Gabapentin affects the nerves or chemicals responsible for seizures and thus helps in controlling seizure.

Gabapentin can also be used for controlling and nerve pain caused by shingles (herpes zoster). 

The medicine is available in tablet, capsule and liquid form and should be taken only if prescribed by the doctor.

Precaution:

  • If your doctor recommends you gabapentin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to gabapentin.
  • If you had or have kidney, liver or heart disease. You should inform the doctor before taking gabapentin.
  • If you are taking any other medicine whether prescribed, non-prescribed, food supplements, vitamins or herbal products, you should inform your doctor.
  • Certain other drugs such as antacids, morphine and hydrocodone can either increase or decrease the effect of gabapentin or any of the medicine as mentioned above and in such case your doctor may recommend lower or higher dose of gabapentin.
  • Gabapentin is a FDA pregnancy class C medicine and its affect on unborn child is not known. However, birth defect has been observed with some other epileptic medicine. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, you should inform to your doctor before taking gabapentin.
  • The medicine may pass into breast milk and if you are a breast-feeding mother, make sure to inform your doctor.
  • If you are recommended gabapentin for controlling seizures, do not stop the medicine even if you feel better. The medicine only work to control seizure as long as you take the medicine.
  • You are recommended to wear a identification tag whenever you go out mentioning details of your health care professional, medicine taken, phone number etc. in case an emergency needed.
  • If you take an antacid, keep a gap of at least two hours between antacid and gabapentin.

Warning:

  • Gabapentin may cause dizziness and therefore after taking gabapentin do not drive and operate heavy machineries.
  • Gabapentin if taken together with morphine may increase the dizziness and drowsiness caused by gabapentin.
  • You should avoid taking alcohol as alcohol may increase the dizziness caused by gabapentin.
  • Children below 18 years of age have been found to occur mild behavioral changes during the treatment with gabapentin.

 Overdose:

  • You should only use the recommended dosage of gabapentin and if you suspect an overdose you should immediately contact to your doctor.
  • The symptoms of overdose may be dizziness, drowsiness, double vision and diarrhea.

Missed Dose:

  • If you missed a dose, take as soon as you remember the missed dose. Do not keep a gap of more than 12 hours between the consecutive doses.
  • Never take double dose at a time.

Side Effects:  

  • Some common side effects of gabapentin when taken for controlling seizure include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, double vision, fever, tremor, muscular problem and lack of coordination in muscles.
  • If gabapentin is taken for managing nerve pain the common side effects may include dry mouth, dizziness, infection, swelling in arms and legs, vomiting, weakness and nausea.
  • If any of the side effects as mentioned above or any other side effects are observed, you should immediately contact to your doctor.

 How to take:

  • The medicine should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor and generally the medicine is recommended three times a day at 8-hour interval.
  • The medicine can be taken with or without food and the tablet should be swallowed with a glass of water.

How to store:

  • Gabapentin should be stored at room temperature and out of reach of children.
  • The medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
  • Outdated medicines should not be used and should be destroyed to avoid misuse of the medicines.
