Anafranil

Common Generic Name:  Clomipramine hydrochloride

Most Common Brand Name:  Paxil

Why and for what symptoms or diseases would I take Anafranil?

Anafranil is a common medical treatment for mental disorders.  Most often, Anafranil is prescribed to treat obsessive compulsive disorders.  There are several different disorders that doctors will treat with Anafranil.  The chemistry of Anafranil is related to such drugs as Tofranil or Elavil.  The chemistry of Anafranil responds to the neurotransmissions from the brain that controls such things as compulsion control.

The drug works to control anxiety that is often the root cause of obsessive compulsive disorders.  The medical community has high hopes that Anafranil will help patients suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder by working to control the urges to take part in the compulsive disorders.  Many of these disorders are the result of trauma or stress in a person’s life.  There is very little that can actually be done to treat the root cause without first treating the compulsive disorder and all that comes with it.  Fear of germs and compulsive hand washing are common disorders that Anafranil is prescribed to treat.

How do I take Anafranil?

Anafranil is one of the easiest of all anti-depressant medications to take. Most patients only take a glass of water when taking the pills or capsules.  In rare occurrences, patients have reported a slight discomfort in the stomach when taking the medication with water.  This is often times remedied by taking the medication with milk or a piece of bread.  There is only a slight chance that you will experience this discomfort.  One thing you should remember is too take the medication in regular intervals.  When this medicine begins to take effect your body will begin to rely on it and if it is withheld because you are skipping doses that are normally taken then you may find that some physical manifestations will occur.  Only stop taking this medication on the orders of your doctor.  Under normal circumstances, people who have been taking Anafranil for an extended period of time need to be weaned off the drug in order to keep any problems from taking place.

Are there any side effects associated with Anafranil?

Just like every drug currently on the market, Anafranil does have some side effects that can occur.  This is not to say that you will suffer from side effects but it is possible.

  • Pain in the abdomen, chest and back
  • Easily agitated
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Constipation
  • Coughing
  • Dizziness
  • Dry Mouth
  • Elevated Heart Beat
  • Increase in urination
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness
  • Sweating
  • Indigestion
  • Increased appetite

Anafranil Drug Interactions, should I be concerned?

It is always important that you tell your doctor about all the medications that you are taking or have taken recently and this includes over the counter medication.  There is the possibility that Anafranil will interact with other medications and create possibly deadly side effects.  It is important to note that there is no way to determine how your body will react to any particular drug.  This is just as true of Anafranil and you may experience some adverse side effects that have yet to be discovered.  If you feel that this has occurred then it is important for you to contact your doctor immediately.

What precautions should I take when I am prescribed or going to be prescribed Anafranil?

  • If you are pregnant then you must not take Anafranil.  The chemistry of the drug can cause birth defects in your unborn child.  If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant then tell your doctor immediately.
  • Those with tumors of the adrenal gland should not take Anaflanil because it can cause your blood pressure to rise sharply.
  • Mothers who are breast feeding should consult their doctor prior to taking Anaflanil.
  • Alcohol can increase the drowsiness that is caused by Anaflanil, so you should avoid any and all alcoholic beverages.
  • Anaflanil can cause your skin to be sensitive.  Avoid being exposed to the sun or direct sunlight for long periods of time.
  • Children and those under the age of twenty-one should not take this product as its effects have not been studied on this age group.
