Garamycin Ophthalmic: Side Effects

Garamycin ophthalmic (generic name Gentamycin ophthalmic) is an antibiotic that is used in the treatment of bacterial infections of the eyes such as conjunctivitis. It is also useful in the treatment of ear infections caused by bacteria.

Gentamycin ophthalmic is also used to prevent infections in the eye after removal of foreign bodies, burns or damage. Garamycin comes in the form of eyedrops or ointment.

How to use Garamycin ophthalmic

Garamycin ophthalimic should be used exactly as prescribed by the doctor. If you are not clear about the instructions, ask your doctor or a nurse or pharmacist. Wash your hands before applying the ointment or eyedrops.

In the case of eyedrops shake the liquid well before applying. Squeeze the container to apply a drop or two, and close your eye. Apply a gentle pressure on the inside corner of the eye that is near the nose for a minute. This will help prevent the drops from draining down your tear ducts. If you are using more than one drop at a time, wait for about five minutes before applying the second drop.

In the case of ointment, apply a thin film of ointment on the lower eyelid by squeezing the container gently. It might be a good idea to hold the tube in your hand for a minute or two to let it warm first, so that the ointment comes out easily. After applying the ointment, close your eyes and roll your eyeball for about a minute or two.

Do’s

  • Use caution while driving or performing any hazardous activity. Use of Garamycin ophthalmic may temporarily blur vision, in which case avoid these activities altogether.
  • Keep the medicine properly sealed
  • Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature away from direct sunlight or heat
  • Confirm with your doctor whether you can use your contact lenses during the treatment
  • If your doctor allows use of contact lenses, wait for at least fifteen minutes after applying the medicine before putting on your contact lenses again.
  • Keep the medicine out of reach of children
  • Inform your doctor of any allergic reactions that you may have, as this medicine should be avoided if you are allergic to Garamycin or other antibiotics such as Tobrex.

Don’ts

  • Do not use if the eyedrop is discolored or has particles in it.
  • Do not allow the dropper or tube opening to come in contact with any external surface including your own body parts such as your hand or your eyes. Doing so may cause the dropper to lose its sterility causing infections.
  • Do not use double dose
  • Do not use other eyedrops or medication when using Garamycin ophthalmic, unless our doctor specifically recommends it.
  • Do not share the medicine with others.
  • Do not use Garamycin for treatment of fungal or viral infections.

Precautions

Prolonged use of this drug may occasionally lead to the growth of fungi in the eyes. In that case, use of the drug should be stopped. Similarly, if you have irritation or experience sensitivity to the drug, you should discontinue its use.

Overdose

Normally overdose does not occur, but if you suspect it, wash your eyes with water. If you have swallowed the eyedrops or ointment, drink plenty of fluids and take emergency help.

Side effects

Side effects may include burning sensation in the eyes, irritation, itching, blurred vision, swelling of eyelids, and sensitivity to light. Normally, there are no serious side effects, and you can continue to use the medicine. It is better that you keep your doctor informed of the side effects.
