Hyzaar Drug Information: Use and Side Effects

What is Hyzaar?

Hyzaar is a combination of the drugs losartan and hydrochlorothiazide, used to reduce high blood pressure. Because of the components Hyzaar is made up of, this drug has also been known to decrease the swelling sometimes associated with high blood pressure.

How to Use Hyzaar

Hyzaar is usually prescribed in pill form, to be taken orally, by physicians. You can take Hyzaar with or without food, but each dose of Hyzaar should be taken with a full (eight ounces) glass of water. Hyzaar is usually prescribed to be taken once or twice daily. Follow the dosing instructions provided by your physician and pharmacist exactly when taking Hyzaar.

What are the Possible Side Effects of Using Hyzaar?

With any medication that you take, there is always some risk of possible side effects associated with the drug. Warnings and Precautions Before Taking Hyzaar

One of the components of Hyzaar, losartan has been known to damage developing fetuses in women. If you are pregnant or may become pregnant, consult with your physician before taking Hyzaar.

Hyzaar may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so use caution when operating machinery, driving, or participating in strenuous activity. Alcohol can increase these feelings of dizziness and drowsiness and may otherwise have an effect on your blood pressure in reaction to this medicine. Consult with your doctor if you plan to consume alcohol while taking Hyzaar.

What Should You Do if You Miss a Dose of Hyzaar?

If you accidentally skip or miss a dose of Hyzaar, take that dosage as soon as you realize it has been skipped. However, skip the dose if your normal dosing schedule calls for another dose of Hyzaar. You do not want to double dose or over dose this medication.  It is very important that you follow a regular dosing schedule of Hyzaar, taking your prescribed dosage as directed by your physician. Do not double dose this medication.

How to Store Hyzaar

Hyzaar should be stored at room temperature, and should be kept tightly closed in the container it is given to you in. Keep Hyzaar out of the bathroom and sink areas where it may be exposed to dampness or heat, and do not allow Hyzaar to be exposed to freezing temperatures such as those found in conventional refrigerators. Do not expose this medication to direct sunlight.  Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children. Be sure to discard any medications that may be past the expiration date.
