Goserelin Acetate: Precaution and Side Effects

Generic Name

Generic name of the medicine is goserelin acetate and it is used for relieving symptoms of prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in premenopausal women. Goserelin acetate reduces levels of testosterone in men and estrogen in women and thus helps reducing symptoms.

Goserelin acetate may also be used for treating endometriosis. Goserelin acetate should be taken only if prescribed by the doctor. The medicine may find other applications also.

Precaution

  • If your doctor recommends you goserelin acetate, tell your doctor if you are allergic to goserelin acetate.
  • If you are taking any other medicine whether prescribed, non-prescribed, food supplements, vitamins or herbal products, you should inform your doctor.
  • If you have a family history of a bone disease or any person in your family is prescribed with anticonvulsant drug or steroid, inform your doctor before taking goserelin acetate. 
  • In case of men having obstruction in ureter, should get treatment for the blockage before taking goserelin acetate.
  • Goserelin acetate should not be used during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor as the medicine can affect the unborn child
  • If you are breast-feeding mother, you should avoid using goserelin acetate as it can affect the baby.

Warning

  • Goserelin acetate may worsen the symptoms during initial weeks. After a few weeks as the hormone level subside, the symptoms will start improving.
  • Goserelin acetate may cause weakness in bones. Old age people may get osteoporosis or even fractures while taking treatment with goserelin acetate.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking and if you are heavy drinker or chain smoker, inform your doctor.
  • If given with sex hormone, goserelin acetate may cause ovarian cysts.
  • Goserelin acetate stops menstruation, but it is possible to become pregnant if you miss a dose. Therefore you should use precaution while you are on goserelin acetate and it may also harm the unborn baby, if you get pregnant

Overdose

  • It is almost impossible to have an overdose of goserelin acetate. However if you suspect an overdose you should contact to your doctor.
  • However, it is very unlikely to have any affect of the overdose.

Side Effects

  • Some of the serious side effects include difficulty in breathing, swelling in face, throat, and lips, skin rash, yellowing of skin or eyes, fever, sore throat and sunburn. If you develop any of the symptoms, you should contact to your doctor.
  • Some common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting, headache, acne, breast development in men, breast tenderness, hair growth in women, hot flashes, insomnia, lung problem, loss of breast tissue in women, sweating, urinary problem, voice change, vaginal dryness and vaginal inflammation.
  • Some rare side effects may include allergic reaction, painful menstruation, vaginal bleeding, chest pain, anxiety, vision problem, fever, heart problem, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, chest pain, diarrhea and osteoporosis.

How to take

  • The medicine is implanted by the doctor and for a endometriosis, a typical dose of 3.6 milligrams of goserelin acetate is implanted for 4 weeks.
  • For endometrial surgery, the doctor may implant for a few weeks before the surgery.
  • For prostate cancer, generally a higher dose for longer period is implanted.  

How to store

  • Goserelin acetate should be stored at room temperature and out of reach of children.
  • The medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
  • Outdated medicines should not be used and should be destroyed to avoid misuse of the medicines.
