Entacapone:

Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is entacapone. Entacapone is used for treating Parkinson’s disease when the effects of combination of doses levodopa/carbidopa remains for very short periods. It extends the effect of the combined dose of levodopa/carbidopa for a longer period.  It has no effect on Parkinson’s disease when used alone. Entacapone should be taken only if prescribed by the doctor.

Precautions:

  • Entacapone when taken with certain other drugs may change the effect of the medicine. If you are taking any other medicine such as antidepressants, certain antibiotics, bitolterol, cholestyrimine, methyldopa and probeincid , you should consult your doctor before taking entacapone.
  • Inform the doctor all the prescribed, non-prescribed, herbal or food supplements you are taking.
  • If you are pregnant or plan to pregnant, you should consult your doctor.
  • If you are breast-feeding, you should inform your doctor before taking entacapone.
  • Dizziness or weakness may occur when rising from a sitting position, so you should take care while rising.
  • If you had liver problem, inform your doctor before taking entacapone.

 

Warning:

  • Enatacapone should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Do not take more or less.
  • Entacapone should be used with caution in patients suffering from low blood -pressure.
  • If you are allergic to Entacapone, you should not take the medicine.
  • If you have a plan to go for surgery including dental surgery, you should tell your surgeon that you are on entacapone.
  • Avoid driving and heavy machinery operation after taking entacapone.

 

 

Overdose:

  • An overdose of entacapone may cause the symptoms like lower blood pressure, nausea, weakness, sleepiness, slow heartbeat, vomiting, and decreased or irregular breathing.
  • You should seek immediate medical help, if you observe any of these symptoms.

 

Side Effects:

  • The side effects of entacapone may include weakness, unconsciousness, severe dizziness or fainting, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, back pain, abdominal pain, abnormal movements of the muscle. If you observe any of these side effects, you should consult your doctor immediately.
  • Some serious side effects include problem in breathing, swelling in mouth, lip and throat, fever and confusion, hallucinations and muscle pain and worsening of Parkinson’s disease. In all such cases you should consult your doctor.
  • Other side effects may also be observed.
  • Your urine may become brownish-yellow in colour after taking entacapone. This is not a harmful side effect.

 

How to take:

  • You should take the medicine in appropriate doses only if prescribed by the doctor.
  • The entacapone should always be taken with the levodopa/carbidopa combinations and maximum up to 8 times a day.
  • Entacapone can be taken with or without food. The tablet should be taken with full glass of water.
  • If you missed a dose, take the medicine as soon as you remember. If it is time to take next dose, take only a single dose. You should not take double dose.
  • You should not stop entacapone, with out consulting your doctor.

 

How to store:

  • Entacapone should be stored at room temperature preferable below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
  • Medicine should be kept out of excessive heat and moisture.
  • Outdated medicines should not be used.
