Intro-Bacid/Acidophilus

Bacid more commonly known as Acidophilus is a herbal health supplement commonly used to re-establish a normal level of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract and vagina.  The gastrointestinal tract consist of both the stomach and the intestines.  It has also been used to treat and or prevent a variety of infections including vaginal yeast infections, yeast infections of the mouth, urinary tract infections, and diarrhea which has been caused by certain antibiotics.  Now one may think it strange to take a supplement which is basically a bacteria, however the human body contains numerous “good” bacteria which are essential to ones health.

Precautions

As with any drug or supplement it is most important to consult with your doctor prior to beginning treatment, as your doctor knows you and your body and is best suited to know whether Bacid is a recommended treatment for you.

It is important to know that Bacid has not been evaluated by the FDA (food and drug administration) for safety, effectiveness, or purity.  In English this means that all the potential risks or side effects may not be known and when using this supplement it will be entirely up to you to way the risk verses the benefits.  In addition there are no current regulations in place governing the manufacturing of this drug and as such it is important to obtain this supplement from a reliable source to avoid outside contamination.

As for food and activity interaction with Bacid,  there are no known food or activity restrictions unless otherwise told by a physician.  Always, consult with your physician prior to starting any new course of treatment to best determine your personal risk factors.  You may also want to consult with a practitioner learned in herbal health supplements as he or she may be able to advise you on what you may want to avoid and how other herbal drugs you are taking may interact with Bacid.

Who should(n't) take Bacid

Again, always speak to your physician prior to taking any drug.  However, if you are currently taking other herbal health supplements you definitely want to speak to him/her prior to use.  If you have experienced allergic reactions to herbal supplements or are allergic to milk/dairy products  you definitely want to talk to your doctor first, as you may not be a candidate for this one.

You should also inform your doctor of any preexisting conditions such as diarrhea which has lasted more than 2-days combined with a high fever, stomach problems, reoccurring vaginal infections, and reoccurring urinary tract infections as Bacid may not be for you.

As with most drugs, pregnant women, or those wishing to become pregnant should not take Bacid.  Nursing moms should also consider other options.  It is always best to talk with your doctor first and then make an informed decision on what is best for you.

As for children there is no known information on whether this supplement could be harmful to them.  Talk with your pediatrician to see if Bacid is right for your child prior to any dosage.

Method of Dosage

The method of dosage largely depends on you and your health care provider.  The supplement is available in pill, granule, and powder forms.  Never combine forms of this supplement as overdose could occur.  Another words don't take a pill and then have a powder form drink to obtain the dosage.  Stick to one method, unless instructed otherwise by a health care professional.   If you miss a dose of Bacid consult with your doctor as there is currently no information readily available involving missed doses.

If you think you may have overdosed seek immediate medical attention.  Help is also available via the Poison Control Hot line at 1-800-222-1222 in the US.  Canadian residents should contact their local poison control.

Side Effects

There are no known reported mild side effects of Bacid, however and increase in stomach gases may occur, but usually dissipates with continued treatment.  This being said, there have been some more serious side effects reported.  These include allergic reaction to the supplement, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, eyes, tongue, and lips, and hives.  If you experience one or more of these symptoms stop taking Bacid immediately and seek immediate  help from a health care professional.

Storage

Bacid should be stores according to packaging instructions, but in general should be stored away from light and moisture and should not be stored in the bathroom.   You should also keep Bacid OUT OF THE REACH of children and pets.
