Aclovate

Generic Name:           Alclometasone dipropionate
Brand Name:              Aclovate

Why is Aclovate used?

Aclovate is a one of the synthetic steroids medications in the cortisone family of medications. It is applied topically in order to relieve the itching of some types of rashes that include psoriasis.            When using Aclovate, some of the medication is absorbed through the skin and enters the bloodstream. An excess amount of absorption may lead to side effects in other parts of the body, therefore to minimize this risk, avoid using large amounts of Aclovate over large areas. Additionally, do not cover treated areas with airtight dressings unless recommended by the doctor.

The use of Aclovate

Aclovate should be used only to treat the condition for which the doctor prescribed it and exactly as it was prescribed. Normally, a thin film of cream of ointment is applied to the rash and massaged gently until it disappears. This is repeated two or three times a day during the treatment period.
For deep or persistent rashes, the doctor may tell you to apply a thick layer of Aclovate and use waterproof bandaging for one to four days. The procedure may be repeated several times as necessary, but do use any bandaging unless the doctor advises you to do so. This medication is intended for use on the skin only, and you must be careful that it does not get into your eyes.
If you forget a dose, be sure to apply it as soon as you remember. However, in the event it is almost time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and simply return to your regular schedule.

Aclovate Side Effects

Side effects cannot always be predicted. Any changes in intensity should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible. Some of the side effects you might experience with this medication include pimples, allergic rash or inflammation, burning, dryness, infection, irritation, pale spots, prickly heat, rash, redness, or stretch marks on the skin.

Special warnings about Aclovate

This product is only for external use, and it’s important to not allow it to get into your eyes. Additionally, only use on your face, underarms, or groin is told to do so by the doctor. Never use it to treat diaper rash nor should it be applied in the diaper area as waterproof diapers or plastic pants can increase the absorption of Aclovate into the bloodstream.
Be sure to tell your doctor if your skin is inflamed or if you suffer from another skin condition as this may cause you to absorb more drug than usual.
The use of Aclovate for longer periods and over large areas may lead to Cushing’s syndrome because of the amount of hormone that is absorbed into the bloodstream. This presents itself as a moon-faced appearance, fattened neck and trunk, and purple-like streaks on the skin. Children are particularly susceptible to an over absorption of the hormones in Aclovate, and should therefore, not be used on children under the age of one year or for more than three weeks on children over the age of one year
Only combine this medication with other of the more potent steroids with the approval of your doctor since this can lead to a large amount of hormones being absorbed into your bloodstream.
If you are pregnant or nursing, use this product sparingly and only with your doctor’s permission since it can find its way into the blood of an unborn child or into the breast milk of a nursing mother.

Recommended dosage

A thin film of Aclovate is applied to the affected area two or three times daily and massaged until it disappears. Bandages that block air may be used if they are recommended by the doctor. The bandages are applied by covering the affected area with a thick layer of the medication and a light gauze dressing. The area is then covered with a plastic film. You then seal the edges around the unaffected skin area with adhesive tape and leave the dressing in place one to four days, after which you may repeat the procedure three to four times as necessary. When using this method, you will usually see a major improvement in a few days. However, if you develop an infection, discontinue the use of the bandages and ask your doctor to prescribe an alternative method.
