Duloxetine:

Generic Name:
Duloxetine or duloxetine hydrochloride drugs are available in generally 20 mg, 30 mg, and 60 mg capsules. This medicine belongs to the family of drugs known as selective, serotonin, and norepineshrine reputake inhibitors (SSNRIs). This drug should be taken only if prescribed by a physician.

Precautions:

  • If you are on prescription for high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, oral contraceptive, sedative tranquilizers, thyroid medication and vitamins. You should intimate your physician before taking duloxetin.
  • If you are pregnant, plan to pregnant or are breast-feeding, avoid the intake of duloxetine and inform your physician.
  • If anyone in your family has a history of depression, bipolar disorder or mania, take all precautions before taking duloxetine and consult your doctor.
  • If you are on duloxetine, tell your doctor before any type of surgery including dental surgery, you may have to go.
  • If you are allergic to duloxetin or any other medicine of this group, tell your doctor before starting the treatment.
  • If you are on MAO (monoamine oxidase), you should not take duloxetine and a minimum 14 days gap should be allowed to shift from MAO to Duloxetine.
  • Sometimes the combinations of medicines, if taken together may interact, so if you are taking any other medicine or herbal product, inform your doctor before starting the medicine.

 

Warning:

  • It has been observed that children and teenagers taking duloxetin are more likely to think about harming or killing he or her or plan to do so. Their behavior may change suddenly and become aggressive, irritable, noisy and agitated.
  • Children below the age of 18 years are not advised to take duloxetin , if prescribed by physician, their behavior should be observed continuously as they may develop serious symptoms at any time.
  • If a child is on duloxetin, he or she should be taken to doctor regularly for examination.

 

Overdose:

  • In children the overdose of duloxetin may lead to symptoms of irregular behavior towards themselves.
  • The overdose may also cause symptoms of agitation, disturbed concentration, confusion, high or low body temperatures and vomiting.
  • The symptoms of over dosage may also include irregular heart beat, severly low blood pressure, coma and convulsions
  • Sometimes the overdose of duloxetin can be fatal.

 

How to take:

  • Duloxetin should be taken only if prescribed by a doctor.
  • Take the appropriate dose as directed by the physician. May be taken with or without food.
  • The effects of duloxetin are observed with a few weeks; therefore duloxetin should be continuously taken, even if you feel well.
  •  In no case, you should stop taking duloxetin, without consulting your doctor, especially if you are on duloxetin for a long time.

 

Side Effects:

  • The common side effects of duloxetin are weakness or tiredness, drowsiness, anxiety, insomnia and dry mouth.
  • In some cases the side effects may be more severe such as difficulty in breathing, upset stomach, decreased appetite, diarrhea, sweating, blurred vision and dizziness. In such cases you must consult your doctor.
  • The extreme severe side effects includes fever, difficulty in urination, rash on skin, yellowness in eyes, irregular heart beat and muscle spasm. If anyone of these cases is observed in the patient, you must call doctor immediately.

 

How to store:

  • The drugs should be stored in a safe place at room temperatures, and out of reach of children. These medicines should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
  • Outdated medicines should be thrown out.
