Epivir:

Generic Name: The generic name of the medicine is lamuvidine. Epivir belongs to the category of Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs). Epivir is used for treating the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) Epivir is used for treating hepatitis B and can also be used for other purposes.  This anti-HIV medicine prevents the HIV from infecting the healthy T-cells, thus preventing the growth of HIV viruses in the body. Epivir is available in tablet and solution forms.

Precautions:

  • If you have liver problem, kidney problem, low red  blood  cells, you should inform your doctor .
  •  If you have a history of pancreatitis, you should inform your doctor.
  • If you are pregnant or have become pregnant during treatment with epivir, you should inform your doctor as epivir has been classified by the FDA as pregnancy category C drug.
  • If you are allergic anti-HIV medicine including epivir, you should consult your doctor.
  • Entocort EC should be prescribed with caution in elderly patients.

 

Warning:

  • If you are breast-feeding mother infected with HIV positive virus, it is recommended that you should not breast-feed.
  • You should avoid alcohol, while you are on epivir. Alcohol may increase the risk to damage liver and pancreas.
  • Avoid unprotected sex and sharing of needles.
  • A side effect of epivir is called lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis (an enlarged fatty liver). This is a rare but serious side effect. Overweight women are at higher risk.
  • If you are taking epivir, you should regularly check for infection of hepatitis B.
  • If you are infected with HIV and Hepatitis B , there are also chances that your hepatitis B infection may show increased symptoms, if you have stopped epivir.
  • Sometimes the combinations of medicine taken together may change the effect of the drug. If you are taking any other drug, you should inform your doctor.

Overdose:

  • An overdose of Epivir may cause some side effects as mentioned below.
  • You should seek immediate medical help, if you observe any of symptoms.

 

 

Side Effects:

  • The rare but most severe side effect of this class of medicine when used alone or in combination has been reported as lactic acidosis. The symptoms of lactic acidosis include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, pain in leg and arms, yellowness in skin and eyes, If you observe any of these problems, you should immediately contact to your doctor.
  • Epivir may also cause swelling in pancreas. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. If you observe these symptoms, you should contact to your doctor.
  • The medicine may also cause allergy to you. If you observe swelling in face, lips, throat and difficulty in breathing, contact your doctor immediately.
  • The more common side effects include dizziness, insomnia, headache and fever, skin rashes.
  • Some other side effects may also occur. In all such cases you should consult your doctor.

 

How to take:

  • You should take the medicine only if prescribed by the doctor. Take the exact doses of the medicine as prescribed by the doctor.
  • You should take the medicine with a full glass of water or as prescribed by your doctor. You should swallow the medicine as whole without cutting or chewing the medicine.
  • Epivir can be taken with or without food.
  • Epivir is taken twice a day for the treatment of HIV and is often recommended in combination with other drugs. For treating Hepatitis B, the medicine is usually recommended once a day.
  • The amount of epivir in epivir-HBV tablets or oral solution for treating hepatitis B is lower than the doses in epivir used for treating HIV.
  • You should not increase or decrease the doses of the medicine without consulting doctor.
  • The oral solution should be measured by measuring spoon correctly.
  • If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is the time to take next dose, follow your regular schedule. Don’t take double dose at a time.

 

How to store:

    • Epivir should be stored at room temperature preferably below 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
    • Epivir should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture.
    • Outdated medicine should not be used.
