Hydroxychloroquine Medication and Side Effects

Generic Name

Generic name of the medicine is hydroxychloroquine. It is an antimalarial drug and is used for preventing and treating malaria. Hydroxychloroquine also acts as analgesic and can also be used for treating rheumatoid arthritis.

Hydroxyxhloroquine can be used for other applications also.

Precaution

  • If your doctor recommends you hydroxychloroquine , tell your doctor if you are allergic to hydroxyxhloroquine or any other chloroquine.
  • If you have or had liver disease, psoriasis, porphyria, or eye problems, you should inform your doctor before taking hydroxychloroquine.
  • Hydroxychloroquine may alter the effects of some of the medicines and if you are taking any other medicine such as digoxin, methotrexate or any gold salt containg medicines, whether prescribed, non-prescribed, food supplements, vitamins or herbal products, you should inform your doctor.
  • If you are pregnant or breast feeding mother, make sure to inform your doctor. Although what side effects hydroxychloroquine may cause to unborn child is not known, it may recommended with caution for pregnant and breast feeding women.

Warning

  • The medicine may cause vision problems such as blurred vision, misty vision and difficulty in focusing and therefore after taking hydroxychloroquine do not drive and operate heavy machineries.
  • If you observe any vision abnormalities, you should immediately report to your doctor.
  • If you observe any hearing abnormalities while you are on hydroxychloroquine, you should contact to your doctor.

Overdose

  • You should only use the recommended dosage of hydroxylxhloroquine and if you suspect an overdose you should immediately contact to your doctor.
  • The symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, vision problem, visual changes, and difficulty in breathing, loss of consciousness, stomach problem, weakness, fatigue, nausea and vomiting.

Missed Dose

  • If you missed a dose of hydroxychloroquine, take as soon as you remember the missed dose. If it is almost the time of your next dose take a single dose.
  • Never take double dose at a time.

Side Effects

  • The side effects of hydroxychloroquine vary from person to person.
  • Some common side effects may include dizziness, muscle pain, itching, rash, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth and diarrhea.
  • Some more severe side effects of hydroxychloroquine include allergic reactions (difficulty in breathing, swelling in face, swelling in lip, swelling in tongue,  throat problem ), visual disturbances (blurred vision, difficulty in focus, mist vision) and hearing disturbances (ringing in ears or hearing loss). If you observe any such symptoms, you should immediately stop hydroxychloroquine and should contact to your doctor.
  • If any of the side effects as mentioned above or any other side effects are observed, you should immediately contact to your doctor.

How to take

  • Take hydroxychloroquine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • The medicine should be swallowed with a full glass of water.
  • The hydroxychloroquine can be taken with or without food. However, if it upsets your stomach take the medicine with food.

How to store

  • The hydrochloroquine should be stored at room temperature between 15 to 30 degree centigrade and out of reach of children.
  • The medicine should be kept away from excessive heat and moisture and should not be refrigerated.
  • Outdated medicines should not be used and should be destroyed to avoid misuse of the medicines.
