Hydrocodone and Chlorpheniramine: Precautions, Side Effects

Hydrocodone with Chlorpheniramine is sold under the brand names of Tussionex and Pennkinetic. This drug is taken for relief of cold, cough and allergies. Hydrocodone is a mild narcotic, and can be habit forming. It should, therefore, be taken only on the advice of a qualified medical professional and should be discontinued when no longer required.

How to take this medicine

Hydrocodone-Chlorpheniramine should be taken exactly as prescribed and in the correct quantities. It is taken as an oral solution or suspension. Accurately measure out the dose with a specially marked measuring jar or spoon that you can get from your pharmacist, rather than use household spoons. Shake well before use.

Some people may experience stomach upset while taking this drug. In that case take the drug with food or milk. Do not take the drug in higher quantities or more often than your doctor recommends.

Storage

Hydrocodone-Chlorpheniramine should be stored at a temperature between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius (59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit). It should be stored in a dry place and should not be frozen. The drug should be kept away from heat and direct sunlight.

Hydrocodone-Chlorpheniramine should be kept out of the reach of children.

Dosage

Take the medicine as per the dosage prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose, you can take it as soon as you remember or are in a position to take it. However, if it almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose. Don’t take more than the prescribed quantity at one time to compensate for the missed dose.

Overdose

Overdose of the drug can be fatal at times. If you suspect overdose consult your doctor immediately and seek emergency medical treatment.

Symptoms of overdose will include cardiac arrest, difficulty in breathing, bluish skin color, low blood pressure, slow heartbeat, cold and clammy skin, extreme sleepiness, coma, and temporary stoppage of breathing.

Precautions

Hydrocodone-Chlorpheniramine can cause drowsiness and decrease alertness. It is better that you avoid driving and hazardous jobs that require constant attention. The drug may also slow down breathing. If you have lung disease or problems with breathing, you should be careful while using this medicine. Other conditions that signal caution in using this drug include asthma, narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary disorders, enlarged prostate glands, and kidney or liver problems. Caution should also be exercised if you have suffered a recent head injury.

Hydrocodone-Chlorpheniramine can cause dry eyes and affect your vision. You may experience some discomfort particularly if you use contact lenses. You can reduce the discomfort by using lubricating drops. If the problem persists, consult your doctor or an eye specialist.

Another side effect of this drug is constipation. If this is severe, consult your doctor. It might be good idea to use a laxative or stool softener while you are on this drug.

Hydrocodone-Chlorpheniramine could be habit forming, and should not be taken in excess of the quantity prescribed by your doctor or for longer time than is necessary.

Pregnant and nursing women should preferably avoid this drug.

Inform your doctor if you suffer from asthma, lung diseases, heart, liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure, prostate problems, glaucoma or vision related problems, intestinal problems, or have suffered a head injury.

Side Effects

Common side effects include anxiety, constipation, stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, itching and tiredness. If these become pronounced, or are persistent or you find difficulty in coping with them, consult your doctor. Other wise these are normal side effects that should go away by themselves.

The more serious include allergic reactions, swelling of face, throat, hands or feet, breathing difficulty, irregular heartbeat, difficulty in passing urine, or chest pain. If you experience any of these, consult your doctor as early as possible.
