A Major Breakthrough In Organ Transplantation

The researchers have done another wonder in the world of medicine where they have made up the urinary bladder from the patients’ own cells and have fixed those bladders in the seven patients who were children and those children are now reportedly doing pretty well and have achieved good long term results from this transplantation.

The researchers have added that it takes about two months for the new bladder before it can be implanted into the body. After that, the bladder enlarges within the body of the individual receiving it. The researchers have also commented that the implant is going to last for the life of the individual. The doctors added that if there would be any complications, these will be more evident when the children will grow.

This is such a remarkable breakthrough that the individuals who are in need of the organs and are unable to get a donor can now have the organ transplanted into them that is cultured from their cells and there is no chance of rejection of organs that are being implanted.

Another big hope is that, since this had been a very successful experiment, there can be different organs that can be cultured that way and this will then lead to a new era where the people can get the organs from their own cells and can go through pretty safe procedures and there will be little or no usage of the immunosuppressant drugs that put individuals at extreme risk for infections.

It was also mentioned that the children who got the bladders transplanted were the ones who were suffering from a defect of the spine known as myelomeningocele. Because of that defect there was incomplete closure of the spine and there was impaired function of the nerves due to which there was incomplete contraction of the bladder, which leads to the different problems in the urinary tract.

The cells with which these organs were grown were taken from the inner lining of the bladder and from the muscles as well. These cells then were grown in a laboratory and then were placed in a scaffold. The scaffold structure was especially made to construct the bladder so that it attains its normal anatomy.

This achievement is going to open new avenues for the transplantation of the different organs and will bring the light of hope to those who are at the verge of life and are waiting to get the transplant for years. I hope that this will bring life to a lot of people.
